Anglesey Half Marathon & 10k
3rd March 2019
The vision was to have a team of runners helping at races at a certain point along a route, usually around about 1.5 miles from the end, where the runner isn’t quite at that finishing point and maybe be starting to doubt whether they can make it. We would run alongside those that wanted us to for a ½ mile or so, to chat to and support to help them achieve their goal, then run back and help the next person. The concept was put into place and ‘Race Angels’ was born.
I (Adrienne) ran Chester Marathon as my 2nd marathon in 2013 and the last couple of miles or so along the river were tough and I wasn’t sure how far it was to the end, so towards the end of that stretch I asked a lovely gentleman spectator whether I had far to go, seeing me floundering and despite him being in his Sunday best he ran alongside me for only a couple of minutes in order to tell me I just had to carry on a little then I would be at the road, then I was into the racecourse .... I could have kissed him!
Back in 2014 I was working at Dublin Rock n Roll Half and was walking through Phoenix Park to the Finish Line, I saw a gentleman walking – it was about ¼ - ½ mile before he would be able to see the Finish Line, as I had my running shoes on, I ran alongside him, spoke to him and encouraged him, leaving him a couple of 100 metres from the line for him to take the glory. He thanked me and said I was his angel.
If you have any questions, please read this collection of frequently asked questions and contact us if you are still unclear about something.
Our events are all over the country, so email us with your name, address and email address and we’ll contact you. Please be aware that you should have good running fitness as we can cover 10 – 12 miles at each event.
Race Angels always endeavour to not inadvertently affect anyones race, so for the front of the pack runners we are a vocal support, along with cow bells!
Each event varies, however we aim to be within the last couple of miles of the race. Once we agree a suitable place with the organisers the information will be on the relevant Event section.
We always ask a runner if it would help if we run alongside them, we absolutely understand that it doesn’t suit everyone and we just wish those runners well and let them continue.
Race Angels is independent of the orgainsers, although we work alongside them to ensure everything is suitable. Race Angels are all volunteers, we’re runners, we know how it feels!
How long a Race Angel runs with someone is discretionary however would usually not be more than a mile and could be as little as a few 100 metres to offer support and encouragement. We don’t run to the Finish Line, we leave you to finish in glory and earn your bling. This gives us chance to run back and help someone else.
